To account for the very great difference between the figures here given for the Malays," and those given in paragraph 31 for “* Malays and "other Natives of the Archipelago," it must be pointed out that there is a very large increase among the Javanese, viz., an increase of 2,615, or 81.6 per cent.

It has been already explained (paragraph 31) that the small increase in the Tamils is partly owing to the Indian troops having been withdrawn since the last Census.

42. In conclusion, we may say that we have every reason to believe that a really good Census has been taken, and that the numbers given fairly represent the population of the Settlement.
